Jill Clayburgh was born on 30 April 1944 in the New York City, U.S.A. She is the daughter of a manufacturing executive Albert Henry “Bill” Clayburgh and Julia (nee Dorr), a theatrical production secretary with David Merrick. She was raised in an upper class family in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. She was a student at the Brearley School and the Sarah Lawrence College.
She is the wife of David Rabe, a screenwriter and a playwright, whom she married in 1979. She is the mother of the actress Lily Rabe and also has a son named Michael.
She wanted to pursue her career in acting from the days when she was studying at the Sarah Lawrence College. She joined the Charles Street Repertory Theatre, Boston. She also appeared in Broadway plays like ‘The Rothschilds’ and ‘Pippin‘ during 1960’s. She has also performed in Broadway production of ‘Barefoot in the Park’ in 2006.
She appeared in a film for the first time in ‘The Wedding Party’, which was filmed in 1963 but was released after six years. She drew much attention of the viewers for her roles in ‘Silver Steak’, ‘An Unmarried Woman’, ‘Starting Over’ and in ‘I’m Dancing as Fast as I Can’. On one hand, she acted as a mathematician in ‘It’s My Turn’ and on the other hand, she acted as a conservative Supreme court Justice in ‘First Monday in October’.
Her film ‘La Luna’ was surrounded by controversies for the scene in which her character in the film masturbates her son to help him out from the addition of heroin. She has also acted as “Carole Lombard” (the screen legend) in ‘Gable and Lombard’. She has also appeared in the films ‘Portnoy’s Complaint’ and ‘Semi-Tough’.
