Donald Sutherland was born on 17 July 1935 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He is the son of Frederick McLea Sutherland and Dorothy Isobel (nee McNichol). He joined the Victoria College of the University of Toronto, where he majored in engineering and drama. He left the intensions of becoming an engineer and started attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He was a member of a comedy troupe, “UC Follies“, in Toronto.
He has a son named Kiefer Sutherland, who is a successful actor. He has a daughter, Rachel, with his second wife, Shirley Douglas. Kiefer and Rachel are twins. Donald Sutherland’s first wife was Lois Hardwick, whom he met at the Victoria College. He is now married to Francine Racette, a French-Canadian actress. Together, they have three sons, Rossif Sutherland, Angus Sutherland and Roeg Sutherland. Rossif and Angus Sutherland are the actors.
He started appearing in the minor roles on the British films and TV. He earned a role in ‘Castle of the Living Dead’, ‘Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors’. He appeared twice for ‘The Saints’, the first time in an episode ‘The Happy Suicide‘, in 1965, and the second time for ‘Escape Route‘ in 1966. Afterwards, he acted in ‘The Dirty Dozen’, ‘M*A*S*H*’ and in ‘Kelly’s Heroes’.
While appearing together in a detective thriller ‘Klute‘, Sutherland and actress Jane Fonda came closer. They decided to appear and to co produce a film ‘F.T.A’ in 1972. He appeared in some more films like ‘Don’t Look Now’, ‘National Lampoon’s Animal House‘ and ‘The Eagle Has Landed’.
He became much famous for his role in the family drama ‘Ordinary People’ and the Italian Fascism epic ‘1900′. He has also acted in ‘A Dry White Season’, ‘Backdraft’, ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ and in ‘JFK‘. He acted in the movies like ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘ and ‘Outbreak‘. He appeared along with his son, Keifer Sutherland in an award winning crime thriller ‘A Time to Kill’.
Recently, he appeared in ‘Cold Mountain‘ (2003), ‘The Italian Job‘ (2003), ‘Pride and Prejudice’ (2005) and ‘Human Trafficking’ (2006). He is known for his role of “Patrick ‘Tripp’ Darling III” in the series ‘Dirty Sexy Money’ and for the role of a multi-millionaire “Nigel Honeycut” in the film ‘Fool’s Gold’.
He won the Golden Globe Award for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for ‘Citizen X’ in 1996 and for ‘Path to War’ in 2003. He earned the nominations under the same category in 2006 for ‘Commander in Chief’ and in 2008 for ‘Dirty Sexy Money‘.
He was nominated for the same award under the Best Motion Picture Actor-Musical/Comedy for ‘MASH’ in 1971, for the Best Motion Picture Actor-Drama for ‘Ordinary People’ in 1981′, for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting role in a Motion Picture for ‘Without Limits’ in 1999 and for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for ‘Human Trafficking’ in 2006.
He also has won the Emmy Award for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Mini-series or a Special for ‘Citizen X’ in 1995 and was nominated for the same award in 2006 for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for ‘Human Trafficking’.
He has been nominated for numerous other awards in vivid categories and has won many of them.
